How to Export and Publish a Video from Descript
Pick the right export settings, share a Descript link, or publish straight to YouTube without losing quality.
Once your edit is done, getting it out of Descript at the right quality matters. You can render a video file, generate a shareable web link, or publish directly to YouTube. This guide explains which option to use and the settings that keep your video looking sharp.
What you need
- A finished Descript project
- A destination in mind (file, link, or YouTube)
- A paid plan for watermark-free, full-resolution export
Step 1: Open the Publish menu
Click Publish in the top right. You will see options to Export a file, share a viewable link, or publish to a connected platform. Choose Export for a downloadable file you will upload yourself.
Step 2: Choose format and resolution
For most uses, MP4 with the H.264 codec at 1080p is the right call: small file, plays everywhere. Export 4K only if you recorded in 4K and the destination supports it. Match the frame rate to your source (usually 30fps).
Step 3: Render and wait
Click Export and let Descript render. Render time scales with length, resolution, and how many effects you applied. Studio Sound and reframing add time. The progress bar shows the estimate.
Container : MP4
Video : H.264, 1080p, 30 fps, high quality
Audio : AAC, 48 kHz, stereo
Captions : SRT sidecar (for YouTube) / burned-in (for social)
Note : export 4K only if the source is 4KStep 4: Publish or upload
If you exported a file, upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, or social manually. Alternatively, use Descript's direct YouTube publish to send title, description, and the video without leaving the app. For quick review, send a share link so collaborators can comment.
Result: a finished tutorial exported as a clean 1080p MP4 with an SRT subtitle file, uploaded to YouTube with toggleable captions, plus a share link sent to a teammate for a final approval pass.
