How to Relight a Flat Product Photo Using Magnific Relight
Add studio-style lighting and mood to a dull product shot with Magnific's Relight tool and a reference image.
A product shot taken under flat office lighting looks lifeless. Magnific Relight re-renders the lighting of an existing image, so you can add a warm key light or a dramatic rim without re-shooting. This guide relights a single product photo while keeping the product shape intact.
What you need
- A Magnific account with Relight available on your plan
- A clear product photo, ideally already cut out or on a simple background
- Optional: a reference image whose lighting mood you want to copy
- A short text description of the lighting you are after
Step 1: Open Relight and upload the subject
From the Magnific tools menu, choose Relight and upload your product image. The tool needs to understand the subject, so a clean cutout or simple background gives the best read of where the surfaces are.
Step 2: Set the light direction and color
Use the light placement control to drag the main light to one side, which creates shadow and depth. Choose a warm tone for an inviting feel or a cool tone for a tech look. Avoid lighting straight from the front, since that recreates the flat look you are trying to escape.
Step 3: Guide the mood with a prompt or reference
Type a short prompt such as soft studio light, warm key from the left, gentle reflections. If you have a reference photo with the exact mood you want, attach it so Magnific matches that lighting style instead of guessing from words alone.
Step 4: Render and refine
Generate the relit version and compare it against the original. If shadows look unnatural, nudge the light position and re-render. Once the lighting reads as believable, export the result for use on a landing page or ad.
Result: a flat, evenly lit perfume bottle gains a soft warm key from the upper left, a gentle shadow on the right, and a subtle highlight along the glass, looking like it was shot in a real studio.
