How to Edit Parts of an Image with Vary (Region) in Midjourney
Use inpainting to fix hands, swap objects, or change one area of an image without regenerating the whole thing.
Sometimes 90 percent of an image is perfect and one corner is wrong. Rather than re-rolling and losing the good parts, Midjourney's Vary (Region) tool lets you mask just the problem area and regenerate only that, optionally with a new instruction. This is inpainting, and it is the fastest way to fix mistakes.
What you need
- An upscaled image you mostly like
- An active subscription on a recent model
- A clear idea of which region to change
Step 1: Upscale the image first
Vary (Region) only appears after you upscale a single tile from the grid. Click a U button, and the resulting message shows the editing buttons including Vary (Region).
Step 2: Open the region editor
Click Vary (Region). An editor window opens showing your image with a freehand and a rectangle selection tool. This is where you paint over the area you want Midjourney to redo.
Step 3: Mask the area to change
Draw over the region you want to fix, such as a malformed hand or an object you want to swap. Try to mask a little beyond the edges so the new content blends, but do not cover the parts you want to keep.
Step 4: Optionally change the prompt for that region
At the bottom of the editor you can edit the text prompt to describe what should appear in the masked area. Leave it as is to simply re-roll the region, or rewrite it to swap a coffee cup for a book.
Step 5: Submit and pick a fix
Press Submit. Midjourney returns a new grid where only the masked area differs across the four options. Upscale the one that fits best and the rest of your image stays untouched.
Result: a clean final image where the broken hand is fixed or the object is swapped, with the surrounding composition, lighting, and style fully preserved.
