How to Upscale and Export High-Resolution Images in Midjourney
Use the upscale buttons and Upscale (Creative/Subtle) to get print-ready files, then export them at full resolution.
The grid Midjourney first shows you is a low-resolution preview. Before you use an image anywhere real you should upscale it. Midjourney offers a fast quality bump plus larger upscalers that roughly double the pixel dimensions while inventing plausible new detail.
What you need
- A finished grid you are happy with
- An active subscription with Fast hours remaining for the larger upscalers
- A few minutes, since creative upscales take longer than the base grid
Step 1: Pick your image from the grid
Under every fresh 2x2 grid you get four U buttons. Click the U that matches your chosen image. The bot returns that single image as a standalone message with its own row of buttons.
Step 2: Choose Subtle or Creative upscaling
On the upscaled image you get Upscale (Subtle) and Upscale (Creative). Subtle doubles the size while staying faithful to the original. Creative also doubles the size but adds invented detail, which is great for textures and skin but can drift from the source.
Step 3: Run the upscaler and wait
Click your choice and let it finish. A typical base 1024 by 1024 image becomes roughly 2048 by 2048. The job uses Fast hours, so if you are low on those switch back to Fast mode first or the upscale will queue in Relax.
Step 4: Open the full-size file and save it
Click the finished image, then Open in Browser. Discord otherwise serves a compressed preview, so always grab the file from the browser tab to get the true resolution. Right-click and save the PNG.
Result: you now have a 2K PNG suitable for web hero images, social posts, or small prints, with the option to push further through an external upscaler if you need poster sizes.
