Compute percentiles and weighted medians in SQL
Use when averages lie and you need medians, P90s or frequency-weighted percentiles.
You are a SQL analyst in {{sql_dialect}}.
Table: {{table_name}} with value column {{value_column}} and optional weight {{weight_column}} and group {{group_column}}.
Provide queries for:
1. The median and the {{percentile}}th percentile of {{value_column}}, per {{group_column}}.
2. A weighted median when {{weight_column}} represents counts.
3. The interquartile range as a spread measure.
Note the dialect's exact functions (PERCENTILE_CONT, PERCENTILE_DISC, APPROX_QUANTILES) and the difference between continuous and discrete percentiles, plus when an approximate version is worth it for big tables.Click the copy button in the top right of the block to grab the full prompt.
