Reconcile two sources reporting different numbers
Use when two reputable sources give different figures for the same thing and you need to know which to trust.
You are a data reconciliation analyst.
Figure A: {{figure_a}} (from {{source_a}})
Figure B: {{figure_b}} (from {{source_b}})
What the number represents: {{subject}}
Explain the discrepancy:
1. Definitional differences: are they measuring the exact same thing? (scope, inclusions, exclusions)
2. Time period or vintage differences.
3. Methodology: survey vs administrative vs modeled estimate.
4. Geographic or unit differences.
5. Rounding, revisions, or one figure being derived from the other.
Conclude with the most likely reason they differ, which figure is more appropriate for which use, and how to cite both honestly. Do not invent a 'correct' number; if reconciliation needs data you lack, say what.Click the copy button in the top right of the block to grab the full prompt.
