AI Video Generation: Getting Started
Runway, Kling and Veo turn prompts and stills into moving footage. The craft is in shot control and stitching short clips into something that feels intentional.
AI video generators create moving footage from a text prompt or a still image. The current leaders each have a personality: Runway gives the tightest creative controls, Kling delivers strong motion and long clips for the price, and Veo brings premium quality with native audio. None of them makes a finished film in one click. The skill is generating short, controllable shots and assembling them into a sequence that feels deliberate.
Text-to-video versus image-to-video
There are two ways in. Text-to-video describes a scene from scratch and lets the model invent it. Image-to-video starts from a still you already control, your own photo or an AI image, and animates it. Image-to-video gives you far more control over how the shot looks, so most creators generate a strong still first and then bring it to life.

13:00Prompt for the shot, not just the scene
Describe the camera as well as the content. Name the shot type and the motion: a slow push in, a pan left, a static wide shot, a handheld follow. The more you direct the camera, the less the model improvises in ways you did not want. Keep each generation to a single clear action; long, busy prompts produce muddy results.

Keep characters and scenes consistent
The hardest part of AI video is making the same character or setting look right across clips. Use reference images where the tool supports them, reuse the same starting still, and keep your style phrases identical between shots. Consistency is what separates a real sequence from a slideshow of unrelated clips.

Bring your clips into an editor, trim them to the beats you want, and cut on motion so the joins feel natural. Then add audio, because sound is what makes generated footage feel real: a voiceover, music and a few sound effects do more for the result than another reroll of the video itself.
- Decide on text-to-video or, for more control, image-to-video.
- Prompt one clear action per shot and direct the camera.
- Generate several short clips and pick the best takes.
- Keep references and style consistent across shots.
- Stitch the clips, then add voice, music and sound.
